Mixed Spicy Nuts

If you love snacking, this Nepali-style mixed spicy nuts recipe is going to be your new favourite. It’s crunchy, spicy, and packed with bold flavours. In Nepal, spiced nuts are often served as a snack with tea or as a side dish with drinks. The best part? You can make this in just 10 minutes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup peanuts (with or without skin)
  • 1/2 cup cashews
  • 1/2 cup almonds
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil (or any cooking oil)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or as per taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black salt (optional, for extra tang)
  • 1/2 tsp Sichuan pepper (timur) – optional but adds an authentic Nepali kick!
  • 1 tbsp roasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • A handful of chopped fresh coriander (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on medium heat. Add the peanuts first, as they take the longest to roast.
  • Stir them for 2–3 minutes, then add the cashews, almonds, and walnuts.
  • Keep stirring to ensure even roasting. Once they turn slightly golden and fragrant, transfer them to a plate.
  • Heat one tablespoon of mustard oil in the same pan. Once the oil is warm, lower the heat and add turmeric, chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, salt, black salt, and Sichuan pepper.
  • Gently stir the spices for a few seconds to unlock their rich aroma.
  • Add the roasted nuts back into the pan and mix well so the spices coat every nut evenly. Stir for about 1–2 minutes on low heat.
  • Turn off the heat and sprinkle roasted sesame seeds on top. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the nuts and give everything a final toss.
  • Let the nuts cool down entirely before storing them in an airtight container. You can also enjoy them warm for an extra punch of flavour.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander if you like a bit of freshness.

Pro Tip:
If you want extra crunch, roast the nuts a little longer on low heat.
